For those of you not paying attention to the news this week, we just got slammed by Tropical Storm Hermine. It's rare for DFW to get hit head on by a storm like this, and we were not prepared in the least. Yesterday was absolute chaos as one of the outer bands made its way through, ripping directly north and inundating us with massive amounts of rain within only a few hours. That's not to say we didn't need the 10 inches we got, we just didn't need it all at once, especially during morning rush hour. It didn't help that we had already had 2 good days of rain before this particularly nasty band blew through.
I typically try to stay away from the highway, since backups are common and I can get to work within 15 minutes taking back roads. EVERYTHING was flooded yesterday morning. I had to take the backroads of the backroads to get to work, and was amazed when I made it in 30 minutes without destroying my car or me having a heart attack. I got home to thankfully a dry house, but this is the first time my back yard has ever flooded, and it's a horrible mess.
I didn't get the chance to take any pictures myself, but here are some good ones from a local news station. The excitement came to a head when several tornadoes were spotted near downtown Dallas and people actually got them on video, one even crossing Love Field (the local airport). Here's a video from one of the tower cams of the same tornado. It's amazing that noone was killed by these, as they hit during the tail end of evening rush hour.
I know there's a few of you down south in the Austin area. How did you fare?
Holy cow! I'm glad you and you fam fared will through that storm! It's amazing how beautiful and devastating nature can be all at the same time! Glad you made it to work on time taking the backroads of backroads. Thankfully you didn't have to take the backroads of the backroads of the backroads. That could have been a real mess. :)

Wow! I had heard that yall got slammed even worse than we did and I am soo glad yall are okay. Still waiting to hear from daughter in the denton area.
ReplyDeleteA tornado in Love field, that is just crazy! I guess we really got an easy go of it. My yard was a lake with a foot of rain. I hear the roads were washed out in the upper San Antonio area and lots of rescues were needed.
We are blessed to be unharmed and no damage.
Sounds like you got quite a bit from this one. We were lucky when Earl was heading our way, the front moving in pushed it over and we got very little wind or rain. In fact, the Nor 'easter in March was way worse!
ReplyDeleteMy God! I'm so glad you and your fam made it thru with nothing more than a soggy backyard. It must have been terrifying driving to work in that!
ReplyDeleteHi from Austin....we also got it pretty hard. I have a metal roof, and so it sounds pretty loud coming down, but usually that kind of rain lasts about 20 minutes. It went on for HOURS! We think we got about 12 inches. Luckily my house is on a hill, but the meadow behind us was swampy the next day. As you probably heard, there was also flooding here, but luckily not in my neighborhood. Sad to hear there were some deaths from this storm across the state. Very scary. I was happy to be safely at home. Glad you are OK. I heard DFW got it pretty bad. Hermine packed quite a punch for not even being a hurricane!
ReplyDeleteMindi, I'm even happier I didn't get washed away!
ReplyDeleteHeather, I'm assuming you finally heard from your daughter. I did hear that there was a good deal of damage in your area, so glad everything is okay.
SuziCate, y'all did luck out! However, I'm still of the opinion that I would rather deal with this mess than more snow.
Kathryn, it was almost as bad as driving Christmas Eve. (I'm sure you all remember THAT story.
Dreamfarm Girl, I can only imagine what that sounded like. I heard about the flooding in Austin, and glad you didn't end up with damage.
This Nicole storm is annoying. I'm not sure it's ever going to stop raining!
ReplyDeletethoughtsappear, welcome to my home! It will stop raining. Eventually. If not, then it's time to build a boat! I seriously considered it myself. Lord knows I would have gotten to work faster. :D
